VPBC Christmas Newsletter
2020 has been a very different (and challenging) year to what anyone could have ever envisaged. It has been so difficult on many fronts for us all.
On the bowling front our plans were thwarted for our 15 league teams, monthly competitions, friendly matches, and the Southport Flower Show Bowls Festival.
It was to have been a celebration of our club’s centenary year.
Speaking personally, it was certainly not quite the final year of my time as chairman that I had hoped for!
New appointments
I am delighted to announce that the Committee have recommended that SUE MOUNTFORD will take over from me in 2021, becoming the first female Chair of VPBC. (This needs to be formal approved at our next AGM).
I am being kicked upstairs and will become Club President. Denise Harvey will become Secretary.
Greens
The Greens are now closed for winter – our hard-working greens team are carrying out all the expensive treatments to both to ensure that they will be in top condition for the start of the 2021 season.
Sad news
I regret having to announce the death of Burt Barwise. Burt was an important and popular member of the club; het has been in a nursing home recently, and sadly became a victim of the COVID pandemic.
New code
Please note the new barrier code 1922 should you wish to enter Victoria Park by car.
2020 competition winners
We cannot have an Awards a night Party, but this years Competition winners were as follows – Sue Davies and Mike McCormick won the August Pairs. The September Mixed Pairs was won by Lillian McManus and Gary Burgess. The Ladies champion was Noreen Lewis, the Mens champion Paul Crummey, the Bowls Ladder was won by Ian Goulding.
Club members of the year
The Members of the Year for 2020 are Gayle & Dave Gordon for the design and smooth operation of our track & trace on-line greens booking system, and managing the club website.
Keeping in touch
One of the worst things currently is not seeing or chatting to our bowling friends. I might suggest we all keep in touch even more than we do normally. If you need a phone number of a club member you would like to chat to – just ask.
Christmas Joke
Q How do you know if Santa’s been in your garden shed?
A You have 3 extra hoes
I would like to close by taking this opportunity, on behalf of Doreen and myself, of wishing everyone a Special Christmas with hopes of lots of good bowling in the New Year.
Cheers – hope you all have a JOLLY CAREFUL CHRISTMAS
Ted Morrell
Chairman
