VPBC Newsletter September 2020
Introduction
Victoria Park BC continues to follow the COVID-19 regulations and acts accordingly. However, we do completely understand that some members will choose to stay away as personal circumstances and views on risks can differ greatly.
Both greens will remain open throughout September (subject to the weather).
An announcement regarding the potential use of greens beyond September will be made later this month, together with details of winter indoor and outdoor bowling plans.
Bowling in 2020 – the story so far
It is interesting to note how busy we have been at Victoria Park BC – over 130 members have bowled at VPBC this year! This, despite none of our 15 teams playing any of their league fixtures this season.
90 members have taken part in the booked bowling sessions, and a further 50 members have participated in the Round Robin events held on Tuesdays, Thursdays & Saturdays. Thanks to John Sawyer & Dave Spratt.
The 2020 Bowling Ladder has 18 participants. Thanks to Andy Muchall for organising.
40+ coaching sessions have been held so far – Thanks to Judy Muchall, Paul Crummey, and Fred Douglas.
The internal VPBC v VPBC team friendly games have been competitive, and a series of return matches are now in the VPBC Calendar.
Club Competition – August
Our first 2020 competition was held on Sunday, August 9th. All 24 participants enjoyed this random mixed pairs event (thanks to organiser Sue Mountford).
The semi-final of the main competition featured Kath Halpin & Peter Hartley and Denise Harvey & Don Devey; the final was between Pat Lough & John Townsend and eventual winners Sue Davies and Mike McCormick.
The consolation competition semi-final featured Margaret Barker & Allen Mountford and Noreen Lewis & Norman Barker. In the consolation final Sue Mountford and Gary Burgess lost to the eventual winners Deborah Herold and John Ashcroft.
Next Club Competitions – September
Our second competition of the season will take place on Sunday, 13 September. This will again be a randomly drawn mixed pairs event. The first competition was so popular that all places have already been filled for this event.
September will feature the Ladies and Mens Singles Championships.
The Ladies Singles Championship is to be on Sunday 20, September starting at 11am. Please text Noreen Lewis on 07922096976 or Sue Mountford on 07805085291 to enter.
The Mens Singles Championship will take place on Sunday, 27 September starting at 11am. Please contact Ian Goulding on (01704) 549501 or Ted Morrell on 07860309723 to enter.
Sign-up sheets for the two singles competitions will also be on the club noticeboard.
Please bring your own packed lunch to these events.
New Members
We are delighted to have welcomed 30 new members this year. You may know someone who might enjoy playing bowls at Victoria Park BC. Do tell them that if they join now, the £35 new member subscription will extend to 31 March 2022 – that is a great deal!
The influx of new members has resulted in a high demand for the lighter bowls, specifically 2lb 2oz & 2lb 4oz weights.
If anyone would like to sell (or donate) lightweight bowls then please get in touch.
I will close by thanking the greens team for keeping the greens in very good condition in what has been unusual summer weather.
Cheers,
Ted Morrell
Chairman
