Flat v Crown Challenge Match Report

The annual Flat v Crown challenge match between Southport’s town centre bowling clubs (Southport Bowling Club & Victoria Park Bowling Club) took place on Saturday, 4 May. The decision to play the match earlier in the year (after adverse weather in the previous two years) proved a good one as we enjoyed a dry & sunny day, playing on bowling greens in excellent condition.

We started the match at Southport Bowling Club’s King Gardens location playing in “Triples” in six lanes. The home team won 4, drew 2 and lost 1 game with an aggregate advantage of +34 to take into the afternoon session.

After an enjoyable lunch we moved across to Victoria Park for the nine afternoon “Pairs” matches utilising both greens. VPBC won eight of the matches with sufficient points to overturn the deficit from the morning session, and claim the Challenge Cup for 2019.

Individual prizes went to Ted Morrell & John Morgan, claiming the only away win of the morning session, and to Steve Goulding & Joan Higham for the best away performance at Victoria Park.

The Ladies at both clubs were warmly thanked for the food & refreshments provided.
