Southport Flower Show

The 2018 Southport Flower Show had a record attendance with over 50,000 visitors for the first time and the weather was largely good. VPBC had 4 very successful days of bowling with almost 200 bowlers playing in various friendly competitions. A huge thanks to all members who helped – greens, catering, tombola, scorers, teams and very especially Mark & Jayne Eustace who organised the two days of Open Competitions.

Special events

Special Events play a big part in club life. Last Saturday, we had 40 members at the Canberra Sports Club in Salmesbury  for our Annual Away Day competition. It was a splendid day out – Congratulations to Gary Burgess on winning the competition.

Andy Muchall has recently launched our first “Ladder Competition” to keep us busy in September and October. Please join it if you can.

Our AWARDS PARTY NIGHT will be held on Saturday 20 October at the Talbot Hotel at 7.00 for 7.30pm. Last year’s was a great night and we are confident this will be too. The ticket price of £15 includes a three course meal of a starter, main course of roast beef or salmon and a sweet followed by coffee.  After the Awards presentations, a ’60s group ‘Still Standing’ will entertain us for the rest of the evening.  Places are very limited and admission will be by ticket only.

Greens Autumn Treatments
It is now approaching the time for the very important Autumn treatments on the greens. These treatments are crucial, and will determine the condition of the green for next season. We wish to have two excellent greens ready for you next year.

The No.2 green will be hollow-tined, scarified, over-seeded, top-dressed and fertilised in w/c 24 Sept and will be ready for play again in w/c 15 October, all weather permitting.

The No.1 green will receive the same treatment w/c 15 October weather permitting and then will be closed for the winter to help its recovery after the summer drought.

Our aim is to keep one green in use throughout Sep, Oct and Nov if the weather permits. We wish to maintain R Robins on Tuesday and Saturday afternoons and Mixed Pairs on Sunday afternoons throughout this period.

New Members
We are delighted to have recruited over 40 new members this year, an all-time record for the Club. The £30 new member offer is still open and gives membership until 31 March 2020. A truly great deal. Do YOU know anyone who would enjoy bowls?  With two greens a splendid pavilion, a good balance between team and social and friendly members, VPBC we are keen to welcome folk.

Tuition Sessions
New members are especially invited to attend 4 tuition sessions to be held on successive Wednesdays at VPBC starting promptly at 1.30. The dates are 3/10, 10/10, 17/10 and 24/10. These will be led by Fred Douglas and Paul Crummey.

2019 Teams.
Please would any member not in a team currently, or anyone wanting to play in an extra team, or wanting to talk about the team options for next year, please email Morrell.ted@gmail.com or text Ted on 07860 309723 quickly. This will help with team planning for next year.

Cheers Ted Morrell Chairman
