VPBC JUNE 2018 NEWSLETTER

It has been great to see lots of members new and old enjoying bowling at VPBC in the recent fine weather.

We now have a group of member volunteers cutting the second green regularly which is already improving its condition. Members can now virtually always bowl – even if a match is underway. Soon both greens will be a pleasure to use.

However the Atco mower used on the second green by the volunteers is not proving to be reliable and a good second hand machine will need to be purchased. We hope to raise the extra funds needed for this via our event and refreshment activities. Please support the volunteers with an extra donation at these events or into the refreshment box if you can.

We are fortunate to have two greens and so have the capacity to welcome new members. Victoria Park BC is a good place to enjoy the great social sport of crown green bowling. Can YOU recruit new members? Only £30 for the rest of the 2018 season!

We are currently in the middle of an 8 week “BOWL FOR HEALTH” coaching programme held on Saturday mornings which is going very well. We hope all participants enjoy the sessions; some have already said they might become VPBC members.

Our 3 Women’s and 7 Men’s team fixtures are now in full swing. Spectators are always welcome. See the website for fixtures and full details of results.

The Saturday 30 June Club Competition has been cancelled and replaced with a Social Round Robin – please arrive by 1.15 for a 1.30 start. This is because of the Friendly Competition on Sunday 1 July with the Southport Croquet.Club.

We have these special EVENTS planned –
1. I July Croquet v Crown Green Challenge
2. 7 July Friendly Match away to Crossens BC
3. 16, 17, 18 & 19 August Southport Flower Show
4. I September Club Outing to Canberra Club, Salmesbury
5. 8 September Friendly Match v our Flat Green neighbours the Kings Gardens based Southport Bowling Club.

Full details on all these will be posted on the smaller board in the Pavilion which is now the designated space for “sign up sheets”. Please do look at them and sign up ASAP.

NB This board will also now be used to show restricted access dates to Victoria Park for cars, etc. Do please note these restrictions carefully.
1. Woodvale Rally 16 & 17 June – no bowls or parking
2. Southport Air Show 6, 7 & 8 July – no parking
3. Southport Flower Show from 13th to 22 August – no parking.
We are actively considering starting a new venture – regular, friendly Mixed Pairs matches at VP. Please sign up if interested and we will organise a meeting to sort out format, days, timing etc.

Please can I ask all members, including especially recent joiners, to come forward with suggestions and ideas to help and improve the club.

Volunteers to help the club are of course very welcome. Please talk to me or any committee member.

Cheers

Ted Morrell
Chairman

A big thank you to everyone who signed up and attended another hugely successful Croquet/ Bowling challenge yesterday Ist July
This was our second meeting with our near neighbours at the croquet club and judging by the pleasing comments could very well become an annual event. The croquet club hosted the morning event, which produced a few winners from the bowling fraternity, John Sawyer being awarded the overall winners prize with a massive 19 points – well done John.
We then retired for a rather excellent and well presented lunch supplied by our friendly hosts after the morning session. Special thanks to Gail Moors, she didn’t do last years event, so this was all new to her, but she handled it with exceptional expertise – well done Gail.
After lunch we then all made our way over to our green for the afternoon session and introduced our guests to how we play ’round robin’ and without exception was thoroughly enjoyed by all concerned. The groups were organized in a way that was to evenly split bowlers with croquet players to make sure that our guests had adequate help and guidance during their games to ensure that their experience was as enjoyable as possible, to which we had a lot of very positive feedback.
Halfway through the session we all had a very welcome tea and cakes break with our ladies providing an extremely lavish and varied selection selection, which definitely went down well. Thank you to all who made contributions.
At the end of what proved to be a most enjoyable day of croquet/bowling, we awarded a few prizes to our visitors who scored well in the ’round robin’, one of whom was Gail Moors herself (I think John Sawyer and Gail have been having secret training sessions).
I would also like to thank everyone who helped with the organization and preparation of the event and made a success of it, this despite the fact that we had to contend with millions of runners around the park on the day. here’s looking forward to next year.
